3rd Day: Parish Church Stella Maris and Indipendence Garden

We visited the Stella Maris Church located in Sliema, Malta, and is dedicated to Mary under the title of Stella Maris, which means "Star of the Sea" in Latin. In the 19th century, the growing population of Sliema required a larger church. Thus, in 1853, the first stone was laid for the new church, designed by the architect Giuseppe Bonavia. 




The construction was completed in 1855 and the church was opened to the public. In 1878, Sliema obtained the status of an independent parish, separating from Birkirkara. In 1899, the church was officially dedicated to Stella Maris. During World War II, in 1942, the church suffered significant damage due to a bombing, but was later restored. In 2018, the church was elevated to the rank of archpriest, with the parish priest assuming the title of archpriest.
It was interesting to hear some passages of the Mass in Maltese, too.

On the same day we explored the Independence Gardens.

6th Day - Three cities

In this day, we visited the Three Cities of Malta : Senglea (L-Isla), Cospicua (Bormla), and Vittoriosa (Il-Birgu). To understand the history of Malta, it is important to know the significance of these three cities, which formed an area called Cottonera. This area was used as a refuge, a defensive bastion, and a home for the various peoples who conquered Malta throughout history. The Knights of the Order of Malta were responsible for building these historic cities, and their influence is still visible in numerous buildings of the Three Cities. Senglea This city has managed to preserve its historical beauty despite the bombings suffered during World War II. The main attraction is Fort Saint Michael, built by the Knights of Malta in the mid-16th century. From here, one can enjoy views of Senglea’s harbor, Valletta, and nearby Vittoriosa. 13th Day - St John's Co-cathedral

  We couldn't leave Malta without visiting one of the main "treasures" of the island: St John's Co-cathedral of Malta.                                            The conventual church built by the Order of the Knights of St John was completed in 1577, soon after the Great Siege. The Order dedicated this church to St John the Baptist.   It was also interesting to admire the wonderful works of Caravaggio.
