7th Day - Mdina and Rabat

Today we explored Mdina and Rabat, which are two historic towns in central Malta, closely linked by their rich past.

Mdina – The Silent City
Mdina, Malta’s former capital, dates back over 4,000 years and is known for its fortified walls, winding streets, and Baroque architecture. Key landmarks include:
  • St. Paul’s Cathedral – A stunning Baroque church dedicated to Saint Paul.
  • Mdina Dungeons – A glimpse into Malta’s medieval punishments.
  • Palazzo Falson – A medieval palace showcasing antiques and art.
We explored the location and we visited The Museum of Torture, that offers a chilling yet thought-provoking look at medieval justice, contrasting sharply with Mdina’s serene atmosphere.

Rabat – A Town of History
Once Mdina’s suburb, Rabat is home to key archaeological sites:
  • St. Paul’s Catacombs – Roman underground burial chambers.
  • Domvs Romana – Remains of a luxurious Roman villa.
  • Wignacourt Museum – Featuring Punic-Roman artifacts and religious relics. 
Visiting Mdina and Rabat is a journey through Malta’s layered history, from ancient grandeur to hidden underground secrets.

6th Day - Three cities

In this day, we visited the Three Cities of Malta : Senglea (L-Isla), Cospicua (Bormla), and Vittoriosa (Il-Birgu). To understand the history of Malta, it is important to know the significance of these three cities, which formed an area called Cottonera. This area was used as a refuge, a defensive bastion, and a home for the various peoples who conquered Malta throughout history. The Knights of the Order of Malta were responsible for building these historic cities, and their influence is still visible in numerous buildings of the Three Cities. Senglea This city has managed to preserve its historical beauty despite the bombings suffered during World War II. The main attraction is Fort Saint Michael, built by the Knights of Malta in the mid-16th century. From here, one can enjoy views of Senglea’s harbor, Valletta, and nearby Vittoriosa. 13th Day - St John's Co-cathedral

  We couldn't leave Malta without visiting one of the main "treasures" of the island: St John's Co-cathedral of Malta.                                            The conventual church built by the Order of the Knights of St John was completed in 1577, soon after the Great Siege. The Order dedicated this church to St John the Baptist.   It was also interesting to admire the wonderful works of Caravaggio.
