7th Day - Rotonda of Mosta

The Rotunda of Mosta, also known as the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption. This church is famous for its imposing dome, which is one of the largest in the world without internal supports. 





The construction of the church began in 1833 and was completed in 1860. The dome has a diameter of 37 meters and is inspired by the Pantheon in Rome.

A significant event in the history of the church occurred during World War II, when a 200 kg bomb dropped by the Luftwaffe pierced the dome and fell on more than 300 believers attending mass. 

Miraculously, the bomb did not explode and no one was injured. 

If you are in Malta, a visit to the Rotunda of Mosta is definitely an experience not to be missed!

There is alan underground shelter in the vicinity of the Rotunda of Mosta.





This shelter was built during the Second World War to provide a safe place for the local community during the bombings. Malta, being strategically important, suffered heavy air attacks, and many areas, including Mosta, adopted solutions such as underground shelters to protect their residents.

This shelter, carved out of the limestone typical of the island, served as a temporary shelter. Although modest, with limited space, it was an essential line of defense against air raids. It is a tangible testimony to the spirit of survival of the Maltese population during that critical period.

6th Day - Three cities

In this day, we visited the Three Cities of Malta : Senglea (L-Isla), Cospicua (Bormla), and Vittoriosa (Il-Birgu). To understand the history of Malta, it is important to know the significance of these three cities, which formed an area called Cottonera. This area was used as a refuge, a defensive bastion, and a home for the various peoples who conquered Malta throughout history. The Knights of the Order of Malta were responsible for building these historic cities, and their influence is still visible in numerous buildings of the Three Cities. Senglea This city has managed to preserve its historical beauty despite the bombings suffered during World War II. The main attraction is Fort Saint Michael, built by the Knights of Malta in the mid-16th century. From here, one can enjoy views of Senglea’s harbor, Valletta, and nearby Vittoriosa. 13th Day - St John's Co-cathedral

  We couldn't leave Malta without visiting one of the main "treasures" of the island: St John's Co-cathedral of Malta.                                            The conventual church built by the Order of the Knights of St John was completed in 1577, soon after the Great Siege. The Order dedicated this church to St John the Baptist.   It was also interesting to admire the wonderful works of Caravaggio.
