Sliema is a vibrant city located on the northeastern coast of Malta, facing the Mediterranean Sea.

The name “Sliema” is derived from the Maltese word “Sliem”, meaning “peace” or “safety,” a reference to the calmness once provided by the area’s natural harbor.

 


Over the years, Sliema has evolved into one of Malta’s most significant urban centers.The history of Sliema dates back to the early 19th century when it was a small fishing village. Under British colonial rule, the area saw rapid growth and transformation. By the mid-1800s, it had become a popular residential district, attracting wealthy British families drawn to its scenic location and pleasant climate. This period of prosperity saw the construction of luxurious homes and hotels, turning Sliema into an upscale urban hub.In the 20th century, Sliema continued to expand, becoming a key destination for both commercial and residential activity.

Today, the city is known for its lively atmosphere, with an abundance of cafes, restaurants, and shops that appeal to both locals and tourists. The seafront promenade, offering breathtaking views of Valletta, is one of the city’s most iconic features. Tower Road, lined with palm trees and offering easy access to swimming areas and cafés, is another beloved spot for visitors and residents alike.

A prominent historical site in Sliema is Fort Tigné, built in the 18th century to protect the island from potential invasions. The area surrounding the fort has since been developed into Tigné Point, a modern mixed-use development featuring luxury apartments, a shopping mall, and a variety of restaurants, blending Malta’s rich history with contemporary living.Sliema is also an important business and commercial hub, housing many local and international companies, particularly in finance, retail, and tourism.

The city hosts a number of high-end boutiques, technology firms, and law offices, further enhancing its reputation as a major business center. The Sliema Ferries area, which offers scenic boat rides to Valletta, is a popular attraction, providing both stunning views and easy access to Malta’s capital.With its rich history, modern infrastructure, and thriving economy, Sliema stands as a dynamic and essential part of Malta’s cultural and commercial landscape

6th Day - Three cities

In this day, we visited the Three Cities of Malta : Senglea (L-Isla), Cospicua (Bormla), and Vittoriosa (Il-Birgu). To understand the history of Malta, it is important to know the significance of these three cities, which formed an area called Cottonera. This area was used as a refuge, a defensive bastion, and a home for the various peoples who conquered Malta throughout history. The Knights of the Order of Malta were responsible for building these historic cities, and their influence is still visible in numerous buildings of the Three Cities. Senglea This city has managed to preserve its historical beauty despite the bombings suffered during World War II. The main attraction is Fort Saint Michael, built by the Knights of Malta in the mid-16th century. From here, one can enjoy views of Senglea’s harbor, Valletta, and nearby Vittoriosa. 13th Day - St John's Co-cathedral

  We couldn't leave Malta without visiting one of the main "treasures" of the island: St John's Co-cathedral of Malta.                                            The conventual church built by the Order of the Knights of St John was completed in 1577, soon after the Great Siege. The Order dedicated this church to St John the Baptist.   It was also interesting to admire the wonderful works of Caravaggio.
